EuroTrip 2016

We spent one week in Europe visiting Amsterdam, Brussels, and Bruges in April 2016. We initially looked into a trip like this back in 2012 in the fall, but we opted to go to Prague, Vienna, and Budapest instead and putting this trip off to the spring sometime when we could see the famous tulip fields in the Netherlands. It’s hard planning a trip around something so dependent on Mother Nature. We live too far away to plan last minute especially with jobs that need plenty of advance notice (think planning in November for the entire following years trips). After plenty of reading and research online, it looked like the third or fourth week in April was typically a safe bet to see at least some tulips. Most years they are peaking then, some years the peak earlier and occasionally later. We chose the third week of April and crossed our fingers that Mother Nature would be kind to us.

We also wanted to visit Belgium after the Netherlands and originally were leaning towards staying in Bruges, but after reading about train travel and my husband realizing that Paris was a 1.5 hour train ride from Brussels, he wanted to base ourselves in Brussels and doing day trips to Bruges and Paris as he hadn’t been to Paris. I had visited Paris back in 2009 on a backpacking trip with my sister and we had arrived after several days in London when we had spent way too much and with our lack of planning prior to arrival, we totally botched Paris (not realizing ahead of time that the majority of museums except the Louvre are closed on Monday) and with being afraid of spending too much money, we really did a pretty bare visit to Paris. So I was more than willing to take a day to revisit the city.

Day 1: Arrived in Amsterdam around lunchtime walked around the city (Southern Canal Belt and Central areas), ended the day in the Jordaan district with a cheese tasting and a visit to the Anne Frank Huis

Day 2: Rijksmuseum, Albert Cuyp Market, Canal Cruise

Day 3: Van Gogh Museum, Red Light District, Cycling through the tulip fields, Keukenhof Gardens

Day 4: Train to Brussels in morning, walked around Lower Town, Chocolate and Beer Tour

Day 5: Day Trip to Paris visiting Notre Dame, Louvre, Eiffel Tower, and the Catacombs

Day 6: Atomium, lunch at Sea Grill, Upper Town

Day 7: Day Trip to Bruges visiting the Belfry, canal cruise, walking around and a Brewery Tour
